dc.description.abstract Tides and Storm Surges in the Bay of Bengal have been simulated with the help of a numerical model. The model is based on an explicit solution of shallow water equations in x-y-t space. The 'model area of the Bay covers upto 10.2'N latitude and it has been discretized by a network of square grids. Time and distance steps of 360 sec. and 90 km. respectively have been a~opted in the .. discretization. Reflection condition has .been assumed along land boundary while displacements due to a M2 tide have been imposed at grid points along the open boundary at 10.2'N latitude. Four types of land boundary configurations have been investigated in order to see the effects upon flow field. Four simplifications of bed topography have also been studied. Computed tidal amplitudes and phases at 12 stations have been compared with the Admiralty Tide Table values. The.storm surge simulation study includes the November 1970 and December 198]. cyclones. Model results for the former cyclone has been compared with the results from six reported model studies. Results from 'the later cyclone have been verified by making comparison with observed data from auto gauges at Chittagong and Hiron Point. en_US
