Abstract:
The. work is divided into three chapters. The first
chapter is entirely devoted to general reviews pointing out
the use of the indigenous herbal medicinal plants in our
life. This part also deals with the description of the plant
Paederia foetida Linn and its medicinal uses. The objective
of the project is also included in this chapter.
The interpretation of the results of the isolated
products from P.aederia foetida Linn has been discussed in
the second Chapter. The petroleum ether extract was subjected
to systematic study and from it the following compounds were
isclated and characterized: Epi - friedelanol, a mixture of
hydrocarbons, keto-alcohol; embelin, a compound containing
carbonyl group and a number of o-butyl group, a keto compound
and B -sitosterol. .AII the above compounds were characterized
by ir, pmr and mass spectra. The identities of them were
confirmed by melting point and by converting them into known
derivatives.
