Abstract:
Primary alkylammonium ion selective polymeric membrane electrodes based
on sodium tetraphenylborate and calix(6]arene ionophore have been developed.
Sensor, (calix(6]arene/sodium tetraphenylborate) and mediator or plasticizer were
incorporated in high molecular poly vinyl chloride (PYC) with the aid of
tetrahydrofuran (THF) for the preparation of membrane. The selectivities of the
fabricated ion-selective electrodes were calculated by means of three different
experimental methods and the electrodes were found to be very suitable for the
measurement of alkyl ammonium ions. Over a pH range 2.9-3.9, the electrodes
exhibit a Nernstian response with a reasonable slope (50 and 54 in mY per.
concentration decade for sodiumtetraphenylborate and cailxarene based electrodes
respectively). Alkylamine, one of the important compounds used in the steam
generator waterlboiler water to prevent the corrosion, has been successfully tested
using 90th the electrodes. Concentrations of Na + and K+ in boiler water have also
been determined using purchased electrodes, selective for these ions.
