Effect of land use change on geometric characteristics of the Buriganga river

Abstract

Dhaka the capital city of Bangladesh, was established on the bank of the river Buriganga in early 17 '" century. The heart of the city is the river Bllfiganga where the study is conducted to find the effect efland use change on geometric charactcri~tics of the river. The study included analysis of geometric data for the different years 1973-74,1985-86,1995-96,2001-2002 and land usc map of the years 1859,1984,1996 and 2001, The river geometry during the period 1984 and 2001 has effected by the land use change (Location: Keranigonj, Pagla, Jinjira, Kamrangir char and Paehandana) and the other part of the study area (Location: Jajera -Dharmagonj , Mirerhag -Faridabad and Kalmarchar-Dawlia, near the village of Basila) has effected by the human intervention such as unplanned dredging. Land use pattern has suggested on the basis of social, economic, and environmental point of VIeW.
