Abstract:
Any construction work is influenced by some internal and external factors. There are several
examples of projects which have failed and some which were inefficient due to miss management. The
performance of construction work depends on the methodology used to overcome the problems.
Several methods are available to identify and resolve the problems. In Bangladesh conventionally the
construction operation is done manually and it is critical to predict the problems. Simulation is a new
approach to find out construction related problems it is both convenient and realistic. It is also an
inexpensive, fast, and flexible method. Simulation is conducted by simulator and activity based
simulator are used to simulate a construction system. Using simulation, a model can be developed in a
virtual platform and it can then be tested with varying input parameters and resources. Simulation
technique may help in making proper decisions by identifying the problems; this can be an important
tool for project management.
As a reverie country many earthen dams are constructed every year in Bangladesh. Several
projects have failed and some were inefficient due to problems of construction. Simulation techniques
are one of the best solutions for identifying such.
Simulation has been performed for the major activities of a project which have a significant
effect on the earthen dam construction. The major problems of the construction site were identified
from real life construction projects. The effects of the problems were correlated with environmental
effect using the computer simulation technique. An earthen dam construction database has been used
were identified the major problems which have a significant effect on time and efficiency of the
project. MS VISIO and construction simulator Stroboscope has been used for simulation and analysis.
Minimizing the problems and optimizing input resources has been identified as the best
technique of an earthen dam construction operation. Thus needs to be taken in to account in project
work to be taken in the future.
