Abstract:
Natural Gas is the most valuable and precious resource among all the available mineral resources in Bangladesh. To protect this resource from different types of misuse, ultrasonic gas meter is going to be introduced in Bangladesh since ultrasonic gas meter is having a number of benefits such as smaller size, lower maintenance cost, and increased reliability over conventional diaphragm meter. This project is an initiative to explore the know-how of this technology. If the know-how of this technology is understood then it will ensure the sustainability of this prepaid metering system. The study of different types of gas meters has been performed as an initial step of this mission of exploring the technology. The study shows gas meters with different technologies and sizes are being used in different gas sectors such as industrial, commercial, residential etc. Ultrasonic gas meter is the main focus of this project, the working principle and other aspects of ultrasonic meter have been explored in details. The scope of the project is not to design the ultrasonic gas meter rather to explore the technology. As a part to explore the technology, how distance and velocity can be measured using ultrasonic sound and micro controller has been shown in this report. This matter has been simulated first and then it is implemented in the laboratory. Implementation results show that our laboratory setup is capable of measuring distance and velocity accurately. With the knowledge obtained from this project, a prototype ultrasonic meter can be designed and developed in future.
